This contemporary Australian landscape painting depicts Ganguddy, Dunn’s Swamp in Wollemi National Park, captured in the late afternoon light.
As I walked along the edge of the lake and up the creek, it seemed as though the bush both invited and threatened to entangle me. Glimpses of shimmering water shone between the still trunks.

This painting was made in my Blue Mountains studio, over several days. The technique involved gradual layering of oil paint to develop complexity in texture, colour, and shape.
The marks — suggesting foliage, water, and tree limbs — were made with fine brushes. Up close, they appear almost abstract, yet from a distance, the viewer apprehends a realistic image.

Rather than pure realism, this work belongs to the Romantic tradition, as it seeks to evoke spiritual and emotive meaning.

  • Medium: Oil paint on a professional artist-quality plywood panel, ready to hang

  • Location featured in the Painting: Warrumbungle National Park, NSW, Australia

  • Genre: Contemporary Australian Landscape Art, Spiritual Landscape Painting

  • Style: This landscape painting appears to employ a realistic style; however, it is imbued with spiritual and emotive meaning and stories, making it characteristic of the Romantic style of landscape painting.

  • Subject: Trees and water in the Australian Bush

  • Colour Scheme: Green, Black, Blue, White, Grey, Violet, Raw Umber

  • Features: This small landscape oil painting evokes a thicket of trees and branches that seem to frame the water of a lagoon.
The lines and shapes create a complex set of interlocking forms that both draw the viewer in and obstruct access — a visual metaphor for the layered experience of entering wild, untamed bushland.

How to Hang Your Painting:
This small landscape painting of Blue Mountains bush is easy to install and ideal for display above furniture or in an intimate domestic interior. Best suited to a well-lit space in either modern or traditional interiors, where good lighting enhances the full depth and vibrancy of the colour palette.

According to Australian gallery standards, artwork should be hung so the centre of the piece sits approximately 155 cm from the floor. Adjustments can be made based on ceiling height, surrounding furniture, and whether the space is used for sitting (like a dining room) or standing (like a hallway). To preserve its condition, avoid placing oil paintings in direct sunlight, as UV exposure may cause fading or discolouration.

Custom framing can be included by arrangement.
